On 12 June 2011 The Heads of State and Government of theCommon Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) officially began negotiations for the establishment of a new Tripartite Free Trade Area with an integrated market of 26 nations, a combined population of nearly 600 million people, and a total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of approximately US$1.0 trillion.
 
When completed in 2012 the new region will make up half of the African Union (AU) in terms of membership, 58% in terms of its contribution to GDP and 57% of the its total population. The new Tripartite Free Trade Area is being established to bolster intra-regional trade by creating a wider market, increasing investment flows, enhancing competitiveness and stimulating cross-regional infrastructure development.
 
The 2nd Annual Pan African Global Trade Conference will feature regional representatives from the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the East African Community (EAC) and the South African Development Community (SADC) to discuss how their upcoming Tripartite Free Trade Agreement will create a single economic space with a larger market and a more attractive business and trade environment for bilateral trade and investment with the U.S. and the African Diaspora.
