P.O.P. WILL HOST PROTEST AT THE FEDERAL BUILDING TODAY!
FOCUSING ON LOCAL POLICE BRUTALITY
SUPPORT FOR NEWARK CIVILIAN COMPLAINT REVIEW BOARD
Today, Monday, June 8th, the People’s Organization for Progress (P.O.P.) will host a rally at the Federal Building, 970 Broad Street Newark at 3pm.
It will be the organization’s second protest in response to the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
Last
week, under the leadership of Lawrence Hamm, its founding chairman and
now a serious candidate for the US Senate, P.O.P. led a protest of
12,000 people condemning the Floyd killing without incident.
This
protest will also demand that the NJ Attorney General Gurbir Grewal
reopen the case of Earl Faison, who was killed by Orange Police officers
in April 1999.
The
most timely demand is that the NJ Supreme Court should uphold the
recent NJ Court of Appeals decision that reinstated the authority of
Newark’s new Civilian Complaint Review Board.
Newark’s
Civilian Complaint Review Board, with full subpoena power, the capacity
to hold independent investigations and its character driven character,
can become a model of Civilian Oversight throughout the country!
Civilian
Review Boards, as they are currently constructed, only have Advisory
capacity on policy and discipline and have no real authority to hold
police officers accountable.
This protest will mark the return of their Justice Monday protests.
In February 2016,
P.O.P. launched weekly Monday protests in front of the Federal Building
in Newark to bring attention to several cases of Police Brutality in
New Jersey that merited Federal investigations. They were called Justice
Monday protests and they went on for over 200 consecutive weeks.
With
the advent of the Coronavirus Pandemic, those weekly rally was
suspended indefinitely. Organizers intend to follow Social Distancing
Guidelines with the Rally’s resumption.
