This special Hip Deep program takes you on a remarkable journey into one of the most enchanting musical practices in Africa - the polyphonic, hocketing vocal style of the BaAka forest people. Ethnomusicologist Michelle Kisliuk shares insights from her 25 years of immersion in this music, exploring both its beauty and the challenges these communities face in the modern world. Experience the BaAka's complex vocal interweaving, sophisticated rhythmic structures, and profound cultural traditions.

Highlights from Our 2025 Music & Culture Tour

DAY 1-3

Dar es Salaam: Urban Rhythms

Arrive in Tanzania's largest city and cultural hub. After a welcome dinner with local musicians, we'll dive into Dar's vibrant music scene with visits to recording studios and performances by powerhouse ensembles like Msondo Ngoma and DDC Mlimani. Experience their hypnotic three-guitar interplay and four-part harmonies that define the Swahili rhumba sound. Private dance workshops included!

DAY 4-7

Zanzibar: Sauti za Busara Festival

Ferry to historic Stone Town for the highlight of our trip: the renowned Sauti za Busara festival at the Old Fort. Experience four days of performances by 30+ artists from across Africa, with VIP access to all stages and exclusive meet-and-greets with musicians. Mornings feature guided cultural tours of Zanzibar's UNESCO heritage sites and spice plantations, with free time to explore the island's pristine beaches.

DAY 8-10

Optional Safari Extension

Extend your journey with our three-day safari to Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park. Expert guides will lead small-group game drives to witness Tanzania's incredible wildlife in their natural habitat. Evening drum circles and cultural exchanges with Maasai communities provide a musical dimension to the safari experience. Perfect ending to an unforgettable cultural immersion!
