Afro-Dominicana: The Other Dominican Republic
Hidden Musical Heritage
In the 1930s, Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo ordered the burning of palos drums in an attempt to erase African cultural traditions from the island. Nearly a century later, those same trance-inducing rhythms still echo at Afro-syncretic religious gatherings across the Dominican Republic and beyond. This episode explores the island's most deeply African musical traditions—palos, salve, gaga—and the artists, both at home and in New York City, who are keeping them alive and evolving through pop, rock, reggae, and hip-hop.
