WASHINGTON D.C. – IFCO)/ Pastors for Peace, the National Network on Cuba, and the General Board of Church and Society of the United Methodist Church, will be hosting an Interfaith Prayer Vigil on June 23rd, 2023 at 5pm at the United Methodist Building (100 Maryland Ave NE). This event is part of a broader initiative - the #OffTheList Campaign - which seeks to address the injustice of Cuba's current designation as a state sponsor of terrorism and its decades-long economic embargo.
Over the past sixty years, Cuba has been subjected to a relentless economic embargo. This strain has been exacerbated since 2017 by an additional 243 sanctions and Cuba's inclusion on the list of state sponsors of terrorism. This label is more than just words; it's a crippling restriction preventing the Cuban people from accessing vital resources, hindering their development, and causing substantial generational hardship. Our economic punishments of countries like Cuba are encouraging people to flee to our shores and are a critical contributing factor in the current increase in asylum seekers from the region. This reality could be alleviated through changes in US policy.
The upcoming Prayer Vigil symbolizes unity in faith, and call for an end to harmful policies. The heart of the #OfftheList campaign will beat in Washington, D.C., on June 25th, with an action at the White House calling for President Biden to rectify this injustice and take immediate action to remove Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. We call for the end of economic terror towards Cuba and a stop to global terror.
