| Victory! Dignity Not Detention Act passes in the NY Assembly Correction Committee |
The Dignity Not Detention Act (S.316 / A.4181) would permanently end New York's immigration detention contracts and prohibit state and local governments from participating in civil immigration detention. Last week, the bill took a critical step forward, passing the Assembly Correction Committee and moving closer to a full legislative vote. The committee vote signals growing momentum to sever New York State's ties to the federal detention system, which advocates say has destabilized families, undermined due process, and allowed various counties to profit from immigrant incarceration. "New York must get out of business with ICE and demand dignity for immigrants. Passing the Dignity Not Detention Act will end all current and future contracts with ICE for the purpose of detaining immigrants. This is the right step toward New York becoming a true sanctuary state that rejects the racist and brutal escalation of immigration enforcement we are seeing across the country," said Staff Attorney Samah Sisay Learn more about the act on NY Dignity Not Detention website. |

| Our statement on the war in Iran |
We stand in solidarity with the people of Iran and across the region who are enduring bombardment and the horror of escalating war. As civilians bear the brunt of yet another catastrophic U.S./Israeli military campaign, we affirm the fundamental principle that no population should be subjected to collective punishment, indiscriminate violence, or endless war.
This escalation reflects a decades-long pattern of militarism and impunity that has devastated communities across the Middle East and Central-South Asia and eroded international legal norms meant to protect civilian life. We grieve the lives already lost and call for an immediate cessation of attacks and the protection of civilians, and we demand an end to impunity and the profound disregard for human rights. | A critical update on our former client Ashley Diamond |
Our work on trans healthcare access continues in honor of our former client Ashley Diamond, who has recently been diagnosed with end stage renal failure. Ashley's advocacy has had a lasting impact. Through her case and public leadership, she helped bring national attention to the treatment of incarcerated transgender people and secured critical protections and access to medically necessary care. Her work has shaped policy and strengthened the broader movement for trans justice. If you would like to learn about how you can support her at this time, feel free to contact us for more information. |
