On Display at City Hall: The Legacy Quilt

MOFAD's Legacy Quilt will be displayed at the Rotunda at City Hall from June 22 - 30, 2026. The Museum of Food and Drink (MOFAD) commissioned The Legacy Quilt as the centerpiece for their 2022 exhibition, African/American: Making the Nation’s Table. Curated by Dr. Jessica B. Harris, widely considered the world’s preeminent expert on the foods of the African diaspora, this exhibition was the first of its kind to reveal the depth and breadth of the contributions of African Americans to our nation’s food culture.

The Legacy Quilt honors the myriad African American food and drink producers who have laid the foundation for American cuisine. Each block represents an African American contribution to American cuisine. Six blocks were intentionally left blank to honor the many stories that have been lost, purposefully untold, or oppressed. Standing at 14 feet tall and nearly 30 feet wide, this awe-inspiring object, consisting of three panels, makes a powerful statement: there are countless stories that deserve recognition.

MOFAD is honored to partner with Deputy Speaker Dr. Natasha Williams, Council Speaker Julie Menin, and The New York City Council to display two of the three panels of the Legacy Quilt at City Hall in honor of Juneteenth and New York City's upcoming celebrations of the country's 250th anniversary. While City Hall is not open to the public, any visitors to City Hall will have an opportunity to view the Quilt (maybe now is the time to give a budget testimony!).
